Content – This carol celebrates the birth of Jesus in humble surroundings, lying in a cattle stall while animals rest nearby. Although he appears to be an ordinary baby, Jesus is recognised as Lord of all, and angels announce his birth with joyful songs. Shepherds (regarded in those days as very disreputable) are the first to witness the angels' message and learn the good news of Jesus' birth. Filled with joy and hope, they praise God that this child was born for all – even the lowliest of us!

Lyrics Sample

Infant holy, infant lowly,

For His bed a cattle stall;

Oxen lowing, little knowing

Christ the babe is Lord of all.

Swift are winging, angels singing,

Noels ringing, tidings bringing:

Christ the babe is Lord of all!

Christ the babe is Lord of all!

Flocks were sleeping; shepherds keeping

Vigil till the morning new

Saw the glory, heard the story,

Tidings of a gospel true.

Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow,

Praises voicing greet the morrow:

Christ the babe was born for you!

Christ the babe was born for you!
